Introducing Peter Handke


Peter Handke is an Austrian novelist, playwright, translator, poet, film director and screen writer .He was born in 6 December 1947 in Griffen in the Austrian state of Carinthia. Handke also wrote short stories, essays, radio dramas and autobiographical works. Through his works, Handke explores everyday reality and their accompanying rational order with their constraining and underlying irrationality, confusion, and even madness. He has been conferred the 2019 Nobel Prize in Literature for ‘an influential work that with linguistic ingenuity has explored the periphery and the specificity of human experience.’ He has also received many other awards including the George Buchner Prize in 1973 and the Austrian Theatre Prize for life time achievement in 2018.

Introducing a few works by Peter Handke:


1) Offending the AudienceA play. It is sometimes called an 'anti-play' because of its renouncement of theatricality. It was originally published in German under the title Publikumsbeschimpfung in 1966.

2) The Goalie's Anxiety at the Penalty Kick: A short novel. It was adapted into a 1970 film with the same title, directed by Wim Wenders. The first of Handke's novels to be published in English. The novel explores the life of a goalie who later becomes a construction worker. He wanders aimlessly around an Austrian border town after murdering a female movie cashier. 

3) A Sorrow Beyond Dreams: A semi-autobiographical novella published in 1972. It is based on the life of his mother. 

4) The Left Handed Woman: A 1978 West German drama film directed by Peter Handke. The film was based on Handke's own novel. This film was shown in the Cannes Film Festival in 1978.  

5) Wings of Desire: Handke wrote the screenplay for the 1987 film Wings of Desire directed by Wim Wenders. The film revolves around two invisible angels, Damiels and Cassiels who move around the city of Berlin providing rays of hope to the distressed people.

An Introduction to A Tale of Two Cities

A Tale of Two Cities is a historical novel by Charles Dickens partly inspired by Thomas Carlyle’s French Revolution , set in London and Paris before and during the French Revolution . The story is an epic tragedy that masterly portrays a great hero with a tragic flaw, caught in an atmosphere of hatred and ruthlessness. The novel tells the story of a French Doctor, his 18-year-long imprisonment in Paris and his release to live in London with his daughter Lucie, whom he had never met. Charles Dickens  Alexander Manette, a young physician started his practice in Paris before French Revolution. After being married to an English lady he became the father of a baby girl. One day December, 1775 he was compelled to follow two aristocrats to a house a few miles away from Paris.  In that house he had to attend two patients, a boy and his sister who had been badly rapped by these two men but unfortunately both patients died. Culture, language, tradition and way of life of a society are best preserved in the repository called stories. In our childhood, in starry nights, we listened to stories from our grandmother.   They always enthrall us, bringing us to the lands of ancient fairies and unicorns or opening the passageway to a world where we witness the eternal woes and pains of human beings, enlightening us with morals to have a balanced life. Department of English, Furkating College successfully organized a storytelling event  Galpakatha  on 28 September, 2019. The invited narrators were Atanu Bhattacharyya, a renowned Assamese poet, writer, an editor of the Assamese literary monthly  Satsori  and Mitali De, a famous Assamese singer.  The programme started at 11 am after a short introduction of the narrators by Dr Debashis Baruah, HOD, Department of English. For the next two hours, the duo narrated stories from countries like India, France, Bangladesh etc, mixing them with hypnotising waves of
